It is known in Panama as "Little Switzerland". The first settlers of Swiss origin dedicated themselves to livestock, coffee cultivation and the installation of sawmills. Nowadays, tourism is a main source of income.
It has a temperate humid tropical climate with abundant rainfall from April to December and temperatures modified by altitude, fog is frequent in winter and the average annual temperature is 18°C.
There is an active ex-pat community in and around Volcán and it is now attracting quite a few young families with children.
