The location
Portobelo is a picturesque and historic village located on the Caribbean coast of Panama, approximately 1 hour drive from Panama City on a newly built road connecting Panama City and Colon.
Portobelo has a long history dating back to the 16th century, when Christopher Columbus discovered Portobello Bay on his fourth voyage to America. Among the explorers and pirates who have left their mark on Spanish Portobello are: Francisco Pizarro, William Parker, Admiral Edward Vernon, Sir Henry Morgan and Sir Francis Drake, whose remains are rumored to still be buried in a lead coffin among the pristine waters and coral reefs of Portobello Harbor. One of the few remnants of these historic days are the ruins of the fortresses with the Spanish colonial lined cannons.
