About Santa Catalina:

Santa Catalina is located in the province of Veraguas. It was once a sleepy fishing village that had been unexplored until the seventies. The location had been a secret kept by surfers in order to protect its exclusivity. Today it still maintains that exclusivity.

Santa Catalina is a tropical heaven offering world class surfing beaches, various islands for snorkeling and fishing, amazing marine life on the Coiba Island National Marine Park, as well as world class scuba diving, bird watching, whale watching, etc . Santa Catalina is the closest access point to Coiba Island National Marine Park, and therefore Santa Catalina serves as the main place to take tours to the islands. The Santa Catalina town has one main street (Central Avenue) that goes directly to the Santa Catalina beach and here you can find the boats that are used for fishing, surfing, and scuba diving tours.

Some of the most popular activities are:

Surfing:

One of the most popular sports in Santa Catalina is surfing, as Santa Catalina offers a wide variety of surf spots, from La Punta offering some of the biggest waves that veteran surfers enjoy riding all throughout the year, to Playa Estero beach break for those who are still learning with smaller waves over sand bottom that are safe consistent and easy to manage. Santa Catalina also offers several surf camps where one can easily take surf lessons and rent surfboards.

Fishing:

Santa Catalina offers some of the best sport fishing in the region, with many surrounding islands like Cebaco Island nearby, bordering the deep reef shelf where the large game fish like tuna, wahoo, mahi-mahi, and other pelagic species roam up and down the coast of the Marine Corridor that extends from the Galapagos Islands down to Cebaco Island and Coiba Island in Panama, and then on to the Cocos Islands off of Costa Rica. It is common to view an army of seabirds diving for baitfish driven up by the huge schools of tuna fish. The tropical weather conditions and warm waters make it the perfect seasonal home for many sea creatures that are trying to escape the winters in both hemispheres, providing great fishing action all throughout the year.

Scuba diving:

Santa Catalina is home to several scuba diving tour operators who mainly offer tours to Coiba Island National Marine Park, which is the main attraction for tourists coming to Santa Catalina. Coiba Island was once a high security prison island for over half a century, which was turned into a National Marine Park in the year 2000. Since it was kept so virgin for so long, without visitors, the marine life flourished and this makes it a great attraction for scuba divers.  Scuba divers get to view the spectacular range of the different types of fish, reefs and marine life of Coiba National Marine Park, a UNESCO World Heritage protected Marine Park, offering one of the largest reefs on the Pacific coast of the American Continent, with a wide variety of marine life. Some areas of Coiba Island are still virtually unexplored and chances of being one of the first visitors are high.

Eco tours:

Eco tours are popular throughout Santa Catalina, and include day trips to and from various islands, including Coiba Island, where these are run by local tour operators. Some of the activities include guided tours of the island as well as Kayak tours provided by international companies in the area. The hotels and local businesses in Santa Catalina also offer a variety of other services including yoga retreats, massages, horse riding tours, and more. Advance planning and booking is advised as this area stays busy with tourists all year long.

Birdwatching:

Bird watchers have the chance to observe an endless assortment of birds within their natural unspoiled habitats in and around Coiba Island National Marine Park. Some of the most popular choices include the scarlet macaw and parrots that are easy to spot among the hills.
