Santa Catalina

Santa Catalina is located in the province of Veraguas. It was once a quiet fishing village that had not been explored until the 1970s. The place had been a secret kept by surfers to protect its exclusivity.

Santa Catalina is a tropical paradise that offers world-class surfing. The closest access point is Coiba Island. The town has a main street that goes into the beach and there you can find boats that are used for fishing, surfing and diving.

Some of the most popular activities are.

Surfing

One of the most popular sports to do, as there are some of the biggest waves that veteran surfers enjoy riding all year round. Those who are not yet experienced can visit Estero which has smaller waves that are consistent and easy to ride. It also has several surf camps scattered throughout the beach where you can hone your skills and rent boards.

Fishing

It is common to see an army of seabirds diving for baitfish driven by the huge schools of tuna. Typical weather conditions and warm waters make it the perfect seasonal home for many sea creatures trying to escape the winters in both hemispheres, giving them year-round action.

Diving

Another activity that allows guests to see the spectacular array of different types of fish that are numerous in number. Trips allow you to see eels, crabs, lobsters and other creatures that thrive on the reefs; you also have the opportunity to see the impressive corals located on the bottom. Some areas are still virtually unexplored and the chances of being one of the first visitors are high, something that cannot be said for many areas of the world.

Ecological excursions

Ecological excursions are very popular throughout the region and include day and overnight trips to and from Coiba Island, organized by local companies. Some of the activities include guided and self-guided tours of the island using kayaks provided by international companies in the area. The companies also offer other services, such as yoga massages. It is advisable to plan and book in advance for maximum enjoyment and relaxation.

Bird watching

Birdwatchers have the opportunity to observe a myriad of birds in their unspoiled natural habitats in and around Coiba Island. Some of the most popular are the scarlet macaw and parrots, which are easy to spot among the hills. The island itself is a UNESCO protected area and is part of a national park.
